In 2006, he established the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer, now known as Kidney Cancer UK, which continues to support research and awareness initiatives. 

In 2024, a year before his passing, he was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to broadcasting and charity.

Whale is survived by his wife, Nadine Talbot-Brown, and two sons from his previous marriage to Melinda Maxted, who passed away in 2018.
