Can XRP Ledger Freeze Funds? Inside the Binance XRP Ledger Exploit

The massive Binance security breach 2026 has sparked a critical question across the cryptocurrency industry regarding asset recovery and network control.

Following the theft of hundreds of millions of dollars in various digital assets, Ripple successfully moved to freeze millions of dollars in stolen stablecoins.

However, industry observers are now asking a crucial technical question. Can XRP Ledger freeze funds when the stolen asset is the network's native cryptocurrency? Read more in this article!

Key Takeaways

  • Ripple froze stolen RLUSD stablecoins linked to the Binance crypto heist.
  • Native XRP cannot be frozen by any issuer on the XRP Ledger.
  • The attacker moved 233 million XRP into six new wallets to obscure the trail.

The incident began on October 29 when attackers targeted Binance hot wallets. The hackers drained a variety of digital assets, prompting an immediate response from major stablecoin issuers.

Ripple acted quickly to freeze 40.5 million RLUSD that had been taken from the exchange. Tether, Circle, and World Liberty Financial also intervened, resulting in approximately 2.7 billion dollars in stablecoins being frozen across the ecosystem.

This rapid action was possible because stablecoin issuers operate with centralized control mechanisms. The terms of service for RLUSD explicitly state that the issuer can blacklist addresses to prevent the transmission or receipt of the token.

This centralized control allows companies to neutralize stolen funds almost instantly, provided the assets have not already been swapped for other cryptocurrencies.

Can XRP Ledger Freeze Funds? The Native XRP Security Distinction

While issuers can freeze the tokens they create, the rules are entirely different for the network's underlying currency. The official documentation for the XRP Ledger states a clear limitation.

Issuers can freeze the tokens they issue, but this control does not apply to the native asset. In simple terms, no one can freeze XRP on the ledger.

This protocol design ensures that the native currency remains decentralized and resistant to censorship. The attacker exploited this exact distinction during the Binance XRP ledger exploit.

According to blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, the hackers stole 233.46 million XRP, worth approximately 296 million dollars at the time. Because no company issues native XRP, the stolen funds remain fully liquid and movable on-chain.

Stolen XRP Movement and Whale Tracking

The stolen XRP sat untouched for roughly 80 hours before the attackers initiated a complex laundering process. XRP whale tracking data revealed that the hacker sent test payments of 1,000 XRP to six new addresses.

Once the test transfers were confirmed, the attacker executed nine large payments, moving the entire 233 million XRP transfer haul into these new wallets.

Five of the receiving wallets now hold roughly 40 million XRP each, while the sixth holds 33.46 million XRP. Blockchain analysts note that this splitting technique is a common method to obscure the audit trail and make the funds harder to trace.

The original holding address was left with a negligible balance of 23.7 XRP. While the funds cannot be frozen at the protocol level, this dispersal complicates the recovery efforts for investigators attempting to follow the money.

The Path Forward: Interception and Recovery

Because the XRP Ledger cannot freeze the stolen assets, recovery efforts must focus on the exit points. Custodial exchanges serve as the primary interception points.

If the attacker attempts to deposit the stolen XRP into a major centralized platform to sell it, the exchange can freeze those specific accounts and seize the funds.

In response to the breach, Binance has stated that it replenished approximately 95 percent of the affected amount using company resources, assuring users that XRP balances are fully backed. Meanwhile, the attackers continue to move other stolen assets.

Portions of the haul have been routed through Tron, exchanged for Ethereum, and laundered via cross chain protocols.

The incident, potentially linked to sophisticated state sponsored groups like the TraderTraitor Binance hack actors, highlights the ongoing challenge of securing centralized hot wallets while managing the immutable nature of native blockchain assets.

FAQ

Can the XRP Ledger freeze funds?

No. The XRP Ledger documentation explicitly states that no one can freeze the native XRP token. Only issued tokens, like stablecoins, can be frozen by their respective issuers.

How much XRP was stolen in the Binance hack?

Attackers stole 233.46 million native XRP, which was valued at approximately 296 million dollars at the time of the theft.

Why did Ripple freeze RLUSD but not XRP?

Ripple issues and controls the RLUSD stablecoin, giving them the technical authority to blacklist addresses. They do not have the same control over the decentralized native XRP asset.

Where did the stolen XRP go?

The attacker split the 233 million XRP across six newly created wallets. Analysts believe this is a laundering step to make tracking and recovery more difficult.

How did Binance respond to the breach?

Binance replenished approximately 95 percent of the stolen funds using its own resources and assured users that the affected XRP balances were fully backed.
